Clinician Scientist Group Leader , Francis Crick Institute
Rupert Beale is a Clinician Scientist group leader at the Francis Crick Institute, and an Honorary Consultant Physician at The Royal Free Hospital. His laboratory works on influenza and SARS-CoV-2, especially focussing on cellular responses to infection by these viruses. He is part of the Crick Covid Consortium and the Genotype to Phenotype project that investigates the biological properties of SARS-CoV-2 variants. He chairs the government advisory panel on testing for Covid-19 in universities in the UK. He has written for the London Review of Books, the Spectator and the Guardian on the science, policy and ethics of the pandemic.
