I am an experienced security manager that have worked in a number of different sectors. I have a passion for science and a degree in forensic science which is why I was excited to move to the Crick as a security officer. I quickly moved up the ladder to control room operator then duty security manager. During my time at the Crick I was honoured to be part of the official opening, where I lead the security team during the Queen’s visit and many other high profile events. In 2017 I was awarded frontline women in security award. Prior to being head hunted for a role in a mass Covid vaccination centre I had been promoted to Site manager. I have used my operational skills to run and manage the day to day non clinical side of the centre, dealing with some very tricky characters and the general public. I am learning a lot of new skills working with the NHS but am grateful for my experience in the security industry and the interchangeable skills I have gained which I have been able to apply in my new role. It’s so important to me to be part of something so poignant right now. I feel as if I am helping make a difference.

Martin Barye-Garcia is the Global Security Director for The Americas for Mars, Inc. and is responsible for all security activities for the largest markets of Mars representing more than 10B in revenue and more than 50,000 associates. He is the former private sector chairperson of the US Department of State Overseas Security Advisory Council, Latin American Regional Council.

Mr. Barye-Garcia began his career in 1982 with the U.S. Air Force serving in numerous special missions and operations including the evacuation of Afghan Mujahedeen from Afghanistan and Pakistan in 1987 and 1988. At the federal level, he served as Cross Designated Drug Enforcement Agent with the US Border Patrol and as Special Agent with the Federal Air Marshal Service.

Mr. Barye-Garcia culminated his federal career as the Senior Intelligence and Security Advisor for the Plan Colombia Counter-Narcotics Program at the US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia with responsibility for the exchange of intelligence and security on all counter-narcotics and counter-insurgency air operations and high value target missions against the narco-terrorist group FARC.
Mr. Barye-Garcia joined the corporate sector in 2006 as the Regional Security Advisor in the Middle East for The Boeing Company with responsibilities in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan at the cusp of the Iraq war. Before his current position with Mars, he was the Regional Security Director for the Americas for the Lockheed Martin Corporation.

He was awarded the order of St. Michael Archangel by the Ministry of Defense of Colombia for his work in the advancement of Colombian Army Aviation. He also received the Meritorious Honor Award by the US Department of State for his work in Colombia.

Mr. Barye-Garcia has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Houston, Law Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) and executive board member of the CSO Leadership and Development Center. Michael Szönyi

Flood Resilience Program Lead, Zurich Insurance Company
Michael Szönyi is member of executive staff in the Group’s Sustainability function with Zurich Insurance Group, based at Corporate Center in Switzerland. He leads Zurich's award-winning Flood Resilience Program, a multi-sector alliance with academia, humanitarian organizations and the private sector, aiming to enhance community flood resilience. The program, originally started in 2012, was recently extended to run in a second phase from 2018-2024 as part of Zurich’s Climate Resilience strategy and is now operating community programs, knowledge and advocacy as well as research in over 20 countries globally.

With his natural hazards expertise, Mr. Szönyi is also responsible for advising the company and all alliance partners on risk insights and risk mitigation strategies as part of the program. A center piece is the implementation of the self-developed flood resilience measurement framework across our program countries and implement resilience interventions to make vulnerable communities more resilient to flooding. In addition, Michael is leading the post-event review function (PERC) which helps learn how big natural events turn into humanitarian disasters, and engages with technical experts and public policy functions to enhance the role of insurance in disaster risk reduction and prevention.

Mr. Szönyi currently has advisory mandates to the United Nations High-Level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (“UN HELP”) and to the European Union’s H2020 community resilience project (“RESILOC”). He serves as Vice-Chair of the Sustainability Working Group of “Insurance Europe”, the European (Re-)Insurance Federation.

Before joining the flood resilience program at its outset in 2012 and taking over as its leader in 2016, Mr. Szönyi previously led the Global Technical Center for Natural Hazards in Risk Engineering. Senior Group Leader of the Cancer Evolution and Genome Instability Laboratory , Francis Crick Institute
Charles completed his MDPhD training in 1999 at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories and Cancer Research UK clinician scientist/medical oncology training in 2008. Charles is a senior group leader of the Cancer Evolution and Genome Instability Laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute and combines his research with clinical duties at UCLH, as a thoracic oncologist, focused on how tumours evolve over space and time. Charles researches branched evolutionary histories of solid tumours, processes that drive cancer cell-to-cell variation in the form of new cancer mutations or chromosomal instabilities, and the impact of such cancer diversity on effective immune surveillance and clinical outcome. Charles is chief investigator of TRACERx, a lung cancer evolutionary study and the national PEACE autopsy program.

Charles was made Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in April 2011, appointed Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2015, awarded the Napier Professor in Cancer by the Royal Society in 2016, appointed Cancer Research UK’s Chief Clinician in 2017, and elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2018 and Fellow of the Academy of American Association for Cancer Research in 2020.
