30 Jan General Tom Middendorp to Address Climate Change as a Risk Multiplier in Opening Keynote
ASIS International is eagerly anticipating our opening keynote at ASIS Europe in Vienna on 21 March where General (ret) Tom Middendorp, Chairman, International Military Council on Climate and Security (IMCCS) will explain the critical nexus of climate change and security risk and demonstrate how innovation and partnership can help mitigate the risk.
General Middendorp was The Netherlands Chief of Defense for five and a half years and spent 38 years serving his country. He commanded soldiers on all levels, led a large multinational taskforce in the south of Afghanistan and was involved in over twenty different military missions as the Director of Operations.
In his work he experienced how climate change is already acting as a risk multiplier. To him it is clear that climate change is also a matter of national security, and that the security sector has a role to play when it comes to mitigation and adaptation efforts.
His keynote at ASIS Europe will bring these challenges to life with his personal observations from his time in Afghanistan and Iraq. He will examine climate change in a context of global population increase and resource scarcity bring, especially at a time when frayed international relationships make global initiatives challenging to implement.
Next, he will show the disruptive effects on local and regional security and how that affects global supply chains. The presentation will also address the direct impact and costs to business operations – with 2023 seeing 28 severe weather events in the US alone causing $93 Billon of damages – exploring the effects on risk management and insurance policies.
Despite all this, General Middendorp is a firm believer in the power of partnerships and of innovation to help us mitigate the risks and provide a brighter and more stable future.
Join us for this unmissable opening to the years must attend event for security leaders in Europe.
CSO Center members attending will have the opportunity to participate in a private audience with General Middendorp to ask all their questions after his keynote.
